Will's Northwoods Inn Named #1 Best Sports Bar In America
I am pleased to announce that Will's Northwoods Inn was named #1 in The Best Sports Bar in America by The Daily Meal! Most of all I would like to thank all of the great sports fans who come out each week to root on their teams.
I would like to also thank our close knit staff all of which try every day to do their best for you! Also, thank you to Ryan Glasspiegel who penned the article!
From the article: http://www.thedailymeal.com/americas-best-sports-bars-slideshow
1. Will’s Northwoods Inn (Chicago)
An oasis in the heart of Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, the Wisconsin-themed bar embodies all of the jolly spirit from Illinois's neighbor to the north: delicious beer, burgers, brats, and deep-fried cheese curds, as well as a sincerely neighborly spirit amongst the patrons and staff that is unsurpassed. Will's always has a great sports crowd, supporting the Cubs, Bulls, and Blackhawks, but especially comes alive for Packers and Badgers games, often hosting more than 700 fans in its three rooms and expansive outdoor patio. It is not uncommon to see fans of rival teams come to Will's because its vibrant atmosphere is not replicated anywhere else."

Christmas Trees At Will's Starting 11/26

PAUL BUNYAN'S AXE RIVALRY - WISCONSIN VS MINNESOTA AT WILL'S NORTHWOODS INN
Back to the most-played rivalry in Division I-A football, with 120 battles dating back to 1890, Wisconsin VS Minnesota. It is the quest for the Badgers to successfully defend Paul Bunyan's Axe for the sixth consecutive year! The tradition of the rivalry game out dates all the others and is, in my humble opinion, the best-natured rivalry in college football!
With terrible news happening off the field at Penn State this week, it will be refreshing to watch actual football and relish in what we love about sports: excellence in teamwork, sportsmanship, and camaraderie, and some delicious food and beverages.

The record of the Axe favors the Badgers with 36 Wins 24 Losses & 3 Ties. But don't expect the Gophers to lie down and lose on their home turf. They almost beat Michigan State University. MN Head coach Jerry Kill has his squad coming together. They are beginning to click and they don't have BCS hopes, so the best they can do this season is muster up all of their fight into one game and try to win the Axe back from us for the first time since 2003.
Wisconsin is still on their quest to capture the Leader's Division. To do this, Nebraska must beat Penn State (which I can see being more and more likely), Ohio must lose before the end of the season, and Wisconsin needs to win outright for the rest of the season.
Don't miss out on watching this game with us at Will's. We're going to miss the season when it's gone. On Wisconsin!

WinSconsin in Brewtober/Bucktober/Packtober
It's hard being a bar in Wrigleyville and not like the Cubs. The fans are genuinely nice people and they come with their families game after game. Even some of our best Packer fans are hard core Cub fans. The Cubs had a hard time of it this year. There were some shining moments on the diamond. There were some great pitching battles and, of course, my favorite rivalry... The Chicago Cubs VS The Milwaukee Brewers that proved to be some of the best games of the season!
BUCKTOBER
October looks like it's going to get very interesting. The Badgers already had a great team before the addition of a quarter back like Russell Wilson. The offensive line dominates anything that crosses their path. Nick Toon is grabbing deep long passes fully extended. The whole team is magnificent. I am really excited to watch them as they start conference play against Nebraska to kick off the month!
PACKTOBER
The Green Bay Packers keeps plugging along against talented opponents. The XLIV Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints, The 2011 NFL #1 Draft Pick and the Carolina Panthers, and the Chicago Bears have fallen to the defending XLV Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers! In the game against the Chicago Bears, Aaron Rodgers connected with Jermichael Finley (friend of the bar) THREE times to triumph by the final score of 27-17.
BREWTOBER
The Milwaukee Brewers have produced one of the more colorful teams in recent memory. Ryan Braun's bat sent baseballs out of the park from coast to coast. Prince Fielder also swung for the fences and fielded 1st base nearly flawlessly! For a big guy, he can really move! John Axeford is more than the mustache. His confidence extends far beyond that brilliant cookie duster of his to provide the Brewers with great saves in clutch situations with a rye smile and some hilarious jokes taboot!
When we look back at the upcoming month from November we may be saying it was the best WISCTOBER in sports history.

A little slice of Cheeseland in Lakeview
A little slice of Cheeseland in Lakeview
Steve Johnson Tribune reporter
11:06 a.m. CST, January 21, 2011
Step into Will's Northwoods Inn on these quiet afternoons before the big day and you're as likely to meet a news crew as you are a Green Bay Packers fan.
It's known far, wide and on Google as the top Packers bar in Chicago, a place where transplants from the north can grab some deep-fried cheese curds and a bratwurst, and tear up at the mention of Vince Lombardi's name, all under the unflinching gaze of wall-mounted moose and muskies.
Bartender Jen Ziel answers phones at Will's Northwoods Inn on the north side of Chicago. Because the upcoming Bears-Packers game will crowd the bar, she has had to tell patrons they aren't taking reservations for tables. (Alex Garcia/ Chicago Tribune)
Will's, for two decades tucked into the Lakeview neighborhood at 3030 N. Racine Ave., has been especially prominent this week, as the Packers prepare to face Chicago's Bears Sunday for the right to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
This confluence — Wisconsin bar in deepest Chicago, plus the first playoff game since 1941 between the two longtime rivals — is what is known in the news trade as a can't-miss feature story.
"Look at this place," says owner Jon Bunge, 74, a native of Lacrosse who came south to make his mark as a corporate lawyer. "This isn't the United Center. It's a neighborhood bar, and all of a sudden, the phone's jumping off the hook."
"Just when I thought I had done every station possible, a new one comes in," says Kevin Kruse, the bar's manager. "You mean we didn't do Fox-Milwaukee?"
When I arrive, local journalism students already have a camera set up in the back room. As I'm talking to Kruse, a reporter and cameraman from a Green Bay TV station show up. A few minutes later, up on the wall, on ESPN, there's injured Packers tight end Jermichael Finley telling all of America he'll be watching the game at Will's.
Kruse shakes his head at that one, amazed that Finley mentioned them and clarifying that the player will actually be the (paid) guest of honor at the bar's Packers party the night before.
If he were to come for the game itself, "he wouldn't be comfortable, trust me," says Kruse. "It's been like a circus. It's crazy," says Kruse. "It's something that I've been praying for and fearing all at once these past few years. and now that it's here, we're fearing it more than anything," Kruse says.
It's true.
What the TV features don't mention is that all this publicity has Kruse, Bunge and their staff mostly worried: worried that their regulars, including retired Packers center Frank Winters, won't get seats on Sunday and worried that the spillover outside will cause problems for the neighbors, worried about the number of people who've called to tell them they're driving down from Wisconsin to watch the game there.
"We've done nothing for the whole week except talk about how we're going to make sure we don't have a problem," Bunge says. "I'll be very happy when this weekend goes," Bunge says. "It doesn't make a difference how the game comes out. I just want to get through this."
With all the media types around, it's not easy to find a real person. Then Jim Meyers, a contractor who lives in the neighborhood, sits at the bar, waiting for lunch.
"It's an awesome place," he says, an endorsement from a die-hard Bears fan. "But it's been just nuts lately. Last Sunday, I came in just to say hi, and it was so crowded, I had to hide behind the bar."
Bryce Lehman walks in wearing the No. 80 of his favorite Packer, wide receiver Donald Driver.
"This is my home away from home," says the 29 year old law student, a Racine native. "I bring friends from Wisconsin here, and they can't shut up about the place."
Will's came into being because Bunge started buying buildings in the area for tax purposes in the 1980s, including the 3030 building in 1987. The tenant was Eski Palmer, and his Palmer's Pub wasn't doing so well in the space, despite what Bunge calls "a really good lease for him, lousy for us."
When Palmer asked Bunge if he wanted to take over, the owner consulted people in the bar business who told him he'd have to do a six-figure rehab to make a go of the place.
But Bunge looked at the wood paneling on the walls and the long wooden bar and remembered old Leinenkugel's billboards and local pubs from up near Hayward, where his family vacationed.
"We bought that moose head," he says. "We bought those two stuffed muskies over the bar. We said, 'Okay, this is a north woods bar.'"
The original idea was that one of the front rooms would be for Packers fans, one for Bears. But the Bears teams weren't so good back in the early 1990s, and the Wisconsin ambience was so strong that it won out.
Now the place is not only Packers central but also a preeminent University of Wisconsin bar, as well. Kruse, whose father had been a bartender at Palmer's and stayed on when it converted to Will's, took over as manager five years ago, and he opened the kitchen with the Cubs season in 2009, and it serves a better grade of bar food, including a nod to the north with deep-fried cheese curds and a beer-soaked bratwurst, laden with sauerkraut.
It's been noticed by national media before -- the Wall Street Journal did a write-up on Big Ten bars, Kruse recalls — but nothing like this week. To handle the expected crush on Sunday, the plan is simple: Open at 9:30, and the regulars' spots will be held for them for an hour. The crowd will be standing-room-only, and true Wisconsinites, Bunge figures, won't mind standing in the tent over the beer garden, near one of the pit heaters.
And, hey, maybe that new guy at the bar is one of the regulars. Nope. He's with the Sun-Times.

Packerpalooza 2011 at Will's Northwoods Inn
The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl this year. It is not easy to be a Packers fan in Chicago. This year has been extra difficult and special to our fans. Green Bay faced off 3 times this season, in hard fought contests, including the NFC Championship which secured the Packers spot and eventually the win in Super Bowl XLV. To honor the team, the fans and the community that gather for their favorite sport to cheer on their favorite team, we annually produce Packerpalooza!
This year should be even better than ever. We're looking forward to heroes from Super Bowl's XXXI & XLV coming to Will's Northwoods Inn on Sunday May 1, 2011!
We'll have more details shortly, but in the meantime, please connect with us on our Facebook event page!

CHICAGO, Ill. (WFRV) -- For fans heading to Chicago for the big game there is a place that feels like a home away from home.
While sitting in a Chicago bar nearly 20 years ago, Wisconsin native John Bunge realized he missed his home state's taverns.
"It dawned on me this bar here was similar in appearance to all the bars i frequented in northern Wisconsin," Bunge said. "It had the wood paneling, all it needed was some dead animals."
So he bought the bar and began filling it with moose head, stuffed musky, and Packers memorabilia, everything that reminded him of Wisconsin and called it Will's Northwoods Inn.
"Its modeled after the Moccasin Inn in Hayward Wisconsin," Bunge said. "The effort was to make it something that people in Wisconsin would feel comfortable in."
Its no surprise Will's Northwoods Inn has become the bar for Packers fans who watch a Packers game in the Chicago area.
"Its as close to a game day experience as you can get, they have the go Pack go chant, there's a half time raffle and anywhere from 200-300 Packers fans every weekend," said Nate Meyers, a Packers fan from Chicago. "Its just a great experience, I've made a lot of friends here."
Will's even serves up some of Packers fans favorite cuisine. "We obviously do the beer brats, fried cheese curds we do Wisconsin bloody Mary's," said Kevin Kruse, a Will's employee.
On Saturday, Packers player Jermichael Finley will be at Will's Northwoods Inn from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. signing autographs and meeting fans.

CHICAGO - Just a few blocks from Wrigley Field there's a corner neighborhood bar called Will's Northwoods, as in the North woods of Wisconsin. It prominently displays its green and gold pride.
"People know who were are and what we're about, so, we do get a lot of Bear fans here too," Kevin Kruse, the bar's manager says. He's been the manager here for five years and in that time became a Packers convert, "It's been a slow transformation. But yeah, Packers, I love the Packers now."
Since 1991 Will's has continued to attract more and more Packers faithful. Last week's Packers game against Atlanta had fans line up out the door.
"Yeah, we had about 50 deep out there until the third quarter. People, I don't know why they didn't make a decision to leave at some point, but they hung on with hope that they would get in," Kruse said of the fans.
And even more Packers fans are expected this weekend, but that won't change bar policy, "You know we're not going to let more people in this week than we normally do. But I think the difference is with all this coverage, we're going to have to turn away a lot more people than we have before," says Kruse.
Injured Packer Jermichael Finley announced on ESPN he'll be visiting Will's this weekend. And so will Bryce Lehman a Packers fan from Wisconsin, but living in Chicago, "You know all week long we've got to listen to our colleagues throughout the week saying how about them bears. Where are you watching the Bears game this weekend, you know, and all that. So then on Sunday, we come here you know, this is our place," Lehman says.
Being Chicago you don't have to travel far from the bar to find Bears fans. You'll even find some inside, just not so much on Sunday.
"If the Bears are playing, I'm watching it somewhere else," says Bears fan Jim Meyers.
If you're in the area and don't have a ticket to the game Will's opens at 9:30 A.M. on Sunday and it can hold a couple hundred people. But Sunday is expected to be the Black Friday of football with fans lining up hours ahead of time to get in.
